Have you noticed the increase in online vouchers - be them on websites, Facebook or Twitter? Consumers are looking for bargains and it seems we like online discount vouchers saving money on retail purchases.
The Financial Times reports:
Internet searches in the UK for “discount vouchers” grew by 47.5 per cent in the year since last August, according to Hitwise, the internet research company. Google’s records show a 67 per cent jump in searches for the term “discount vouchers” between December 2007 and December 2008.
Last month, Ask Jeeves became the latest internet search engine to join the voucher trend. The site, which is keen to differentiate itself against bigger competitors such as Google and Microsoft’s Bing, unveiled a new feature that displays online discount vouchers related to any of the search terms users enter.
One of the biggest hits was the Pizza Express two-for-the-price of one main meal offer voucher, which ran in a Sunday newspaper and online last year. “Pizza Express voucher” was the second most popular voucher-related search term after the more generic “voucher codes”, according to Hitwise.
Robin Goad, UK director of research at Hitwise, said searching for vouchers had become an established part of online shopping. “Consumer behaviour has changed so that people are looking online to research a product, looking at where to find the best price and finally doing a search to see if there is a voucher for it.”
The article also comments that 70 per cent of ABC1 consumers – classed as professional and white-collar workers – say they have used money-off vouchers in the past six months, according to research by Future Foundation, a consumer trend think-tank. This equates to nearly 20m adults in the UK.
Only 62 per cent of consumers classified as C2DEF, which include manual workers and the unemployed, said they had secured bargains in this way.
I have also noticed the ability to add vouchers on some of the online directory listings which are free or a minimal cost to join.
So how could you use online vouchers for example on Facebook or Twitter or on your website? And if you have used online vouchers, what results have you experienced?
