Great infographic from the BBC showing the changing use of social networks across the globe

A great infographic from the BBC about the changing numbers of people engaging in social networks across the globe.

The data is provided by Nielsen as at June 2010.

You will see the growth in LinkedIn which now has over 70 million business people on their site - no where as big as Facebook but certainly a network that is of interest especially if you are a B2B marketer.

Seattle Swedish Hospital Celebrates it's 100th birthday with an Abba Flash Mob

Here is a great example of an alternative way to celebrate your centenary - with a flash mob.

I noticed an article at Ragan.com about the Swedish Medical Centre in Seattle celebrating the 100th anniversary of the non-profit healthcare service (funded by Swedish immigrants some 100 years ago).

On the Seattle hospital’s anniversary, employees were invited to gather for a group birthday photo and then some of the employees started to dance to Abba's 'Dancing Queen'. At the timeof writing this article the video on YouTube has had 18,851 views.

You will also find the hospital online:

Twitter leading the way in real time search?

Twitter’s search engine is serving more than 24 billion searches per month compared to Bing’s approximate 4.1 billion and Yahoo!’s approximate 9.4 billion combined reports The Telegraph. I wonder what the numbers for Facebook search are however.

The newspaper comments that a study by Nielsen last year discovered that Bing was the fastest growing search engine in the US after its growth increased by over 22 per cent, post its launch. However since last April, Twitter searches have increased by 33 per cent.

To put this in context, Google supports approximately 88 billion search queries per month, however the article comments that searches performed on Twitter on are performed more with the intention of finding out 'real-time' information.

Back in April Twitter founder Biz Stone revealed that the current number of registered users of Twitter are 105,779,710 with about 300,000 people registering each day for a Twitter account.

Apparently a quarter of Twitter users have no followers (I am guessing some of those accounts are ones set up to protect brand names), 65% of the world’s top 100 companies (I think we have some way to go before this is the base in Ireland) have a Twitter account and there are more than 70,000 applications currently using Twitters API reports Emarketer.

There are apparently 65 million Tweets a day (how many of them are yours?

Latest comScore statistics indicate Twitter still has strong growth

TechCrunch.com last week reported on the continued growth of Twitter.

According to comScore’s numbers Twitter grew from 83.8M unique vistors in April to 90.2M in May worldwide — an increase of 7.6%.

By comparison, there was 5.5% growth between March, when Twitter had 79.4M, and April’s 83.8M.

A year ago comScore reported that Twitter had 37.3M million uniques.

TechCrunch goes on to comment that the meaure is not accurate in terms of the total number of people people using Twitter’s platform as it only includes data for people who have been to Twitter.com, and not any applications that access Twitter through the API.

Twitter COO Dick Costolo recently shared the company’s internal stats, which show that Twitter gets 190 million visitors per month (though this is not people actually using Twitter to publish content as some people just visit the site), and 65 million tweets a day.

Have you found more people in your network starting to use Twitter?

Exxon Mobil launches it's corporate blog

It's good to see another corporate blog being established - this time by Exxon Mobil. A timely move given the challenges BP are facing?

The blog is authored by Ken Cohen who is vice president of public and government affairs for Exxon Mobil Corporation with worldwide responsibility for the company’s public policy, government relations, communications, media relations and corporate citizenship activities.

He comments:

To help encourage dialogue on the energy challenges we all face,  we’ve created the Perspectives blog. I’m calling it our “energy issues and policy blog,” meaning I’ll talk about ideas and actions from industry, governments, researchers and many others that affect the world of energy.

You will also find Exxon Mobil officially on Twitter (unlike their first account almost 2 years ago) - though interestingly they are using the channel for 'push communications' and aren;t following anyone at this time thought they have over 2000 followers.

What other corporate brands have you seen starting to blog this year?

iPhone Hootsuite app now enables bookmarking of Tweets to review them later with the integration of Instapaper

One of my favourite tools for managing Twitter on my iPhone and in my browser is Hootsute so it was great to see a new update of the iPhone app released which has the ability to book mark Tweets that you want to come back to later with their integration of Instapaper.com.

You need to create an account with Instapaper which is free and you can also organise folders for future archiving and easy reference.

Read all about the new release of Hootsuite for the iPhone on their blog - they have also made the app available in Japanese, German, Spanish, and Portuguese and have enbled emailing Tweets (something I have loved for a long time on UberTwitter for the Blackberry.

I've tried the integration and it works smoothly - my only problem now is making sure I don;t bookmark too many Tweets or I will get no work done - but it is a great integration to support your online research.

Testing out Blackbird Pie

Facebook Marketing: Hyper-targeted ads by City and Town in Ireland are now available http://bit.ly/cBDllFless than a minute ago via Facebook

Did you know that the message above is an embedded Tweet?

I wrote about the new service from Twitter on how to embed your Tweets into your website and blog over on the Marketing Mentor Facebook page earlier this week.

The Twitter service you use is called Blackbird Pie and you can see an example of an embedded Tweet above.

Twitter comment on their media page that:

Note that this is not guaranteed to work on your platform; it works for me here on a very plain WordPress install. If it does work, when you paste the tweet into your post, it will pick up some of your styling, e.g. the font-family you use on your <p> tags. That's intentional!

How do you use Twitter? Research indicates it's more of a news site than a social network

How do you use Twitter? A group of Korean researchers has recently analysed information from 41.7 million user profile, looking at 106 millionTtweets and followed 4,262 trending topics and found that many people are using Twitter as a news site. Haewoon Kwak, one of the researchers, presented the work at the WWW2010 conference in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The research found that only 22 percent of "follows," where one person chooses to include another persons Tweets on their page, were reciprocal far less than the reciprocal rates on Flickr (68 percent).

What will be the first ad we see today when Twitter launches 'Promoted Tweets'

  • As we previously described, the new system serves up ads based on keywords in Twitter search queries.
  • Promoted Tweets will appear at the top of the search results page, with small text indicating they were sponsored. The Times piece notes that companies could use this to combat negative tweets (they can place a positive tweet at the top of the page)
  • A Promoted Tweet isn’t guaranteed to stay afloat for a long time — if the tweet isn’t tracking well in terms of replies, clicks, and a number of other metrics Twitter is calling “resonance”, it will be pulled, and the advertiser won’t pay for it.
  • One ad will be shown at a time
  • Initial ad partners include Best Buy, Virgin America, Starbucks, and Bravo
  • Advertisers will be paying on a CPM basis initially, with plans to adjust the model once Twitter can better gauge how people are engaging with Promoted Tweets
  • So the long awaited news about the Twitter Advertising platform was covered yesterday in a number of online publications with the announcement from twitter expected today. (The above excerpt was from TechCrunch.com)

The programme is apparently going to be called 'Promoted Tweets', will mean that adverts will show up Twitter users search for keywords that the advertisers have bought to link to their ads and that in a later development, Twitter plans to show promoted posts in the stream of Twitter posts, based on how relevant they might be to a particular user.

According to comScore, Twitter.com had 22.3 million unique visitors in March 2010, up from 524,000 a year ago, excluding the millions of people who use third party applications to use Twitter.

The adverts will mean that as a business you will be able to insert messages about your products or services into the stream of real-time conversation.

In the New York Times there is a quote from Starbuck VP of brand, content and online Chris Bruzzo who comments “When people are searching on Starbucks, what we really want to show them is that something is happening at Starbucks right now, and Promoted Tweets will give us a chance to do that.”

Initially it is anticipated that you will will pay per thousand people who see promoted posts.

The interesting question for me is will we ignore the ads as some of us do on Facebook and in Google search results?

I wonder what the first ad insert in Twitter will be that I see today?
