Have you ever wondered how people manage to add calls to action over videos and even email optins? This is something I have studied and explored for a number of years. Some video hosting platforms make this feature available for a fee and there have been a number of services that have made this type of feature available, some of which I have personally explored.
I recall Lead Pages having a service called Lead Player in the past and then finding it no longer supported which disappointed many people.
I recently discovered a new app from one of the orginal developers who was involved with the LeadPlayer app. The app is called ConvertPlayer and costs currently $8 per month (you have to pay for a 12 month subscription) for the standard app that they call ‘Basic’ – however there is a promotion at the moment that means you can get lifetime access for US$39.
This was too good an offer to miss, so I invested and you can see below a walk through of how the app works.

The tool will work for YouTube and Vimeo videos that you embed on your site – using the app to provide the wrap around for the optins – or you can use the WordPress plugin that is available which means you can create your customised optins within your WordPress site.
Once you have purchased access to the plugin all you need to do to get started is add the video url of the video you want to use to the ConvertPlayer plugin or on the app in the browser.
You need to ensure that the video you are using is public or unlisted – it will not work if the video is private. As this works with Vimeo and YouTube, interestingly you could add a call to action or optin to someone else’s video that you embed on your own site – this could be of interest if you are an affiliate marketer – but make sure that you follow disclosures as required in the county you operate in.
The description from your YouTube video will be added as a default.
This can however be customised. You can also change your settings to enable the video to auto play, you can hide the video controls and you can redirect people once they have watched to video to another page – this could be a great option to use if you are using the video on a sales page or landing page.
One of the features that is available with the app is to add a clickable call to action to your video. For example, you could add a call to action to visit another page to access a bonus.
The call to action can be added at the start or end of the video, or any stage during the video. For example, you could let someone watch part of the video and then click the call to action to download an accompanying worksheet. The call to action url can open in a new window and you can allow people to skip the call to action rather than having to fulfill it for the video to continue to play.
You can see a clickable call to action in the video posted earlier on this page around the 1 minute 10 second mark – here is an animation that shows you how the call to action appears under the video and allows people to click through to get access to ConvertPlayer. Adding the call to action under the video means that viewing the video is not interrupted for the person watching and the call to action appears at the relevant time in the vidoe when it is being discussed.
When I was testing the app on my first video, I chose not to use the call to action button, but I did add a Facebook Share to the video. See the steps I took in the image below.
- I customised the text to entice people to share the video
- I chose to add the call to action button to the end of the video
- I selected the option to have the Facebook share appear over the video – I could have also chosen this to be below the video
- If the call to action to share had been placed before the end of the video I could have allowed people to skip the share and continue to watch the video.
Here is what it looks like to have the customised share message for Facebook under the video.
One particularly powerful feature is the ability to integrate list building into your video marketing. ConvertPlayer works with a number of email marketing providers including MailChimp, Drip, ConvertKit (the tool I use), ActiveCampaign, Zapier, GetResponse, aWeber, and Infusionsoft.
The default button stated ‘Play’ so I changed this to say ‘Subscribe’. The optin can be placed at any place during the video.
Once you have customised your player you can then copy the embed code for your video to add it to your website, or if using the WordPress plugin you will be able to copy the WordPress shortcode and add it to your article.

Questions About The App With Insights From The Developer
Having tested the browser version and the WordPress plugin version of the app I had a few questions and observations so contacted the developer. Read below his responses.
WordPress Plugin access – It is not obvious that there is a WordPress plugin – it is referenced on the website but is not mentioned when you log into the browser app. I discovered the plugin when researching about ConvertPlayer and installed it from the WordPress plugin directory into my site. The developer agrees that it needs to be promoted more and they are planning to add help and instructions on how to find and install it.
Of course you do not need to use the plugin. What I do like about the plugin is that when you add content on the browser app it immediately updates in the WordPress app.
You can also easily add your videos once they have been customised for lead generation when writing your articles on your site using the visual editor as you can see in the image below.
When installing the WordPress plugin, I found that the colour of the admin area of my site turned green.The developer advised that they had fixed the problem with the plugin and to ensure that you have the latest version. I had installed the latest version of the plugin but I found that if I disabled it and reinstalled it again then the issue was corrected.
I do hope that the plugin gets an update that also shows you all the blog posts and articles that you have embedded a video in which will make it easier to go back to update the posts and articles in the future.
Video SEO feature enhancement – I really likes the ability to optimise the title and description of the video – and I suggested to the developer that they add a character count so that it makes it easy to use. This feature has been added to the development list.
Social Sharing – I think the option of having social sharing to Facebook as an option for people to have to act upon to watch the video is great. However other social sharing such as subscribing to your YouTube channel or sharing to Twitter or LinkedIn would be of added value. The developer commented that they are actively looking into other ways how to extend the sharing functionality of the share button in video and more services will be added in the future. I do hope subscribe to YouTube to watch the video is a feature that is added, alongside follow on Facebook for Facebook Pages, and re-Tweet on Twitter.
Using ConvertPlayer with other video services – it is great that this app works with YouTube and Vimeo videos, however it would be helpful if it worked with other videos such as if you are using Amazon S3 to host your own videos. The developer advised me that support for Amazon S3 is something they are considering and is probably going to be available in the second half of 2017.
Using ConvertPlayer on other sites such as LinkedIn posts and Medium articles – the ability to add optimised videos to websites and WordPress sites is great, but with the popularity of LinkedIn and Medium as publishing platforms it would be good to be able to use it there. The developer advises that this is something they are exploring – though it is a difficult challenge.
Adding the email optin call to action under the video – the feature of adding the email optin over the video or under the video is great; however when you add the optin under the video the call to action is not visible, unlike with the Facebook share. The developer liked this suggestion and will be looking to add this feature in a future version of the app.
Allowing people to play the video again if the call to action is placed at the end of the video – I found that if I wanted to play a video again and the call to action was at the end of the video, the only way to do this was by refreshing the browser on the article. The developer did not specifically address this point with me but did advise that if someone has already opted in they are looking to amend the app so that it will not show the optin again.
In summary, if you are serious about video marketing and want to generate leads and sales through your YouTube videos, while there are many other tactics I share in my workshops, when it comes to embedding your videos on your website, if you are not adding the ability to convert your videos into optins onto your list or more reach on social, you are missing a trick! I am delighted to have discovered ConvertPlayer especially as I secured lifetime access for US$39 – frankly it’s a steal even at the regular price and far less expensive than many other options available.
