Social business and live stream news 23 April 2017 by digital marketing strategist Krishna De

Every week for the Live Stream Insiders Show, we review up to news stories to bring our listeners the latest live video case stories, resources and news from the works of live streaming.

Our goals is to provide a valuable resource for marketing leaders, communications professionals and business executives delivered in just 30 minutes so that they can apply the ideas we share to help them be more effective with the integration of live video into their business.

We usually cover about eight stories, so in this curation I am not only bringing you the news that we covered, but other social business, live video and digital marketing resources and tools that I think you will find of interest and assistance.

Of special interest to those of you living in the west coast of Ireland, I cover the forthcoming FREE events for the MoJoCon Fringe if you are interested in learning about mobile content creation.

I also mention at the bottom of the article how to join my NEW free accountability group for those of you just getting started with live video – you will also find a link to all my resources from the masterclass I delivered on the topic of live video at the Social Media Summit Ireland. If you need a speaker on the topic of social business and live streaming then you can schedule a conversation with me here.

I hope you find the resources I share of help for your communications planning – do let me know if you implement any of the ideas we shared in the show.

Deaths on `Facebook Live` are a suggested search result on Google.com

Deaths on ‘Facebook Live’ are a suggested search result on Google.com

When you search “Facebook Live” on Google.com today, the most popular searches that appear in Google suggested results are around murders, torture, and death.

I checked the results for Google.co.uk which are somewhat similar, though these types of suggested results do not seem to currently appear for Google.ie search results.

It seems as though from a search perspective, Facebook Live has an online reputation issue to be managed.

How Turner`s Super Deluxe gets most of its Facebook Live viewers when it is live

How Turner’s Super Deluxe gets most of its Facebook Live viewers when it is live
Turner’s comedy-centric studio uses hours-long broadcasts, proprietary software and off-Facebook experiences to average nearly 680,000 live views. Often with live streams we find that replay viewers are larger in number than real-time viewers.

Super Deluxe schedules live streams to give them the best chance of catching people’s attention.

When it began live streaming on Facebook in May 2016, its broadcasts typically ran for 15 or 30 minutes each; now they average two-and-a-half hours a pop. That prolonged window, and the fact that Facebook’s algorithm ranks live videos higher in the news feed increases the chance that more people will come across the stream.

Super Deluxe also schedules its broadcasts to start typically around 2 p.m. PT to catch West Coast viewers in the afternoon slump, East Coast viewers as they finish work and British viewers before they go to bed.

What ideas does this give you for your live stream content plan on Facebook?

Facebook`s new 360 cameras bring exploration to live videos

Facebook’s new 360 cameras bring exploration to live videos

Facebook is introducing two more 360-degree cameras at this year’s F8: the x24 and x6. These cameras can shoot in six degrees of freedom, which promises to make the 360 footage more immersive than before.

With six degrees you can move your head to a position where the camera never was and still view the world as if you were actually there. Move your head from side to side, forward and backward, and the camera is smart enough to reconstruct what the view looks like from different angles. Instead of just looking around the inside of a photosphere, you now have movement within it. This lets you explore 360-degree video freely, the same way you can in VR spaces. All of this is due to some special software that Facebook has created, along with the carefully designed pattern of the cameras.

3D printed Insta360 Nano tripod adapter

3D printed Insta360 Nano tripod adapter

A popular 360 camera for iPhone is the Insta 360 – it’s a camera I own and used at events for capturing immersive live video, images and video content.

The only problem is that is you do not have it attached to your phone which you can then connect to a tripod with an adapter, there is no way to use the camera without purchasing a separate tripod adapter – personally, I think it would be great if were shipped with one.

However thanks to a member of the Insta 360 Facebook Group, I discovered there is a way to have a tripod/selfie stick adapter created by 3D printing which you might want to check you if you too want a way to secure your 360 camera when taking photos or live streaming. Used with a remote you can even position yourself not to be seen in the video!

YouTube iOS apps jumps to the top of the US App Store following the recent update for access to live streaming
As we spoke about in a previous episode of Live Stream Insiders, YouTube recently dropped the requirement down to 1,000 subscribers for mobile live streaming through the YouTube app.

It seems this update resulted in an increase in downloads of the YouTube iOS app as it subsequently rose up to the top of the App Store.

Have you tried live streaming to YouTube through the YouTube app yet?

Facebook launches beta of Spaces a social VR platform

Facebook launches beta of Spaces a social VR platform

Facebook Spaces launched this week in beta on Oculus Rift + Touch. The product is a first taste of Facebook’s ambitions to bring social interaction into 3D virtual spaces. In the app, up to four friends logged-in to their Facebook accounts can join a “space” and chat, draw, watch 360 videos, make video calls on Messenger and take VR selfies of their cartoonish avatars

In a recent earnings call, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg called virtual reality something that won’t see its full potential realized for another 10 years.

There are between 30-50 Facebook employees working on Social VR, but with augmented reality and virtual reality growing central to Facebook’s core product, these teams are sure to grow massive as more people buy headsets.

YouTube Live is gaining ground on Twitch for live video

YouTube Live is gaining ground on Twitch for live video

YouTube Live is adding more streamers per month than Twitch is. From October 2016 to March 2017, monthly active streamers have grown 330% for YouTube Live compared to 19% on Twitch. YouTube is much smaller in absolute terms than Twitch, which is part of why it’s growing much more rapidly. If YouTube continues to add streamers at the current rate, it could be as large as Twitch in the next 18-24 months, Streamlabs reports.

The article on Business Insider quotes from their paid report:

  • Live streaming video will further accelerate streaming videos overall share of internet traffic. Streaming video accounts for over two-thirds of all internet traffic, and this share is expected to jump to 82% by 2020, according to Cisco’s June 2016 Visual Networking Index report.
  • Live video’s value comes from its unique ability to add an authentic human element to digital communications. As a result, brands are leveraging three main streaming methods to connect with their viewers: tutorials, product launches, and exclusive and behind-the-scene footage

  • Advertisers will continue to invest heavily in online video, especially as live streaming video gains traction. Already in the US, digital video ad revenue reached $7.8 billion in 2015, up 55% from 2014, according to figures from the Internet Advertising Bureau

  • While live streaming is still in its early stages, brands are leveraging micropayments, mid-roll video ads and direct payments from social platforms, to monetize their live streaming videos

  • The success of live streaming video hinges on brands overcoming a lack of measurement standards in the space, as well as changes in social media sites’ algorithms that affect what content users see.

Live tech shows perform so well on Facebook Live publishers are investing in them

Live tech shows perform so well on Facebook Live publishers are investing in them

Bloomberg Technology reporter Mark Gurman has recently launched a new live show “Gadgets with Gurman,” a product-focused show that will feature tips and hacks that get viewers get the most out of a product.

With many publishers having trouble figuring out what works as live video, a growing number are pushing conversations about tech, a topic that performs well enough on Facebook so that many publishers are breaking it out into a separate channel

You can hear from the host of the show Mark Gurman in this interview.

Interestingly they are taking 90 second highlights from each espisode and syndicating the videos across the other Bloomberg properties – see an example here.

Do you watch or even host live technology shows on Facebook Live?

The Philadelphia Archdiocese embraces Facebook Live

The Philadelphia Archdiocese embraces Facebook Live

The Philadelphia Archdiocese used Facebook Live for broadcasts in the run-up to Holy week. Live streaming church services is not new, though it appears that this is the time this Archdiocese has explored Facebook Live.

The article comments that the use of Facebook Live is in keeping with the Vatican’s call to reach out to people in the public square wherever they are – in this case, the social media square.

Free And Low Cost Digital Tools You Can Use

    • If you are using influencer marketing in your business, a new Twitter search tool has been released called Tweeple Search.

In the Infuencer search mode they search for your query/keyword in article content people have shared rather than in the bio text as other platforms do. You can even see the list of article URLs they’ve shared. The results are ranked by the number of shares those articles got.

With Tweeple Search you will be able to:
-Find target audience or influencers in any domain sorted by follower count
-Analyse your competitor’s Twitter followers to understand their marketing patterns
-Compare different Twitter accounts to see what they have in common and how they differ
-Find Twitter influencers based on keywords in popular content they share.

      • If like me you are really passionate about creating audio content on the move, check out the platform Ense.

Using their Android or iOS app you can easily record an audio message and post it to specific people you share the link to or publically through social media channels.

It is easy to use and I like the fact you can delete files, though I would be nervous about some of the content that is being posted there anonymously which you may not want to have your brand associated with.

    • If you are looking for a low cost tool to create you a ‘logo’ for a project check out Logaster. I can certainly see how some small businesses or entrepreneurs could put this to use as they even have a free service for a logo you can use on the web.
    • Apple has made the GarageBand and iMovie apps as well as the iWork suite available free for all users. This article in iDownload blog gives you links to all the free apps.

If you now have an iPhone and have not tested iMovie for editing of your video content perhaps now is the time to try – many professional mobile journalists who work for major news publications use it all the time.

Get 5 lifetime business licenses for Filmora for US$49

Get 5 lifetime business licenses for Filmora for US$49

If you are looking for an inexpensive video editing tool for your desktop check out this offer from Filmora – you could share this across your family and friends as you get FIVE business licenses (lifetime access) for only $49.

I use this app on my phone but the offer is for a much more powerful license than what is available on mobile – you could even edit gifs and create split screen videos so you could have Snapchat or Instagram stories easily edited into your video. Plus you can create engaging lower third captions, intros and exits to your videos.

Get the offer here – I don’t anticipate it being available for long.

Note: if you purchase through this link I receive credits (not cash) for referring you to it.
