I take a lot of screen shots on my desktop and my mobile devices to help me when creating tutorials and workshops.
A trusted tool I hae used for many years is Snagit by Techsmith – I use it to take screen shots on my PC and can then add annotations, arrows, blur out things I do not want made publically visible and even record video screen capture tutorials, which is really helpful when giving people feedback on their website, social media content or even copy for their book proposals and online PR.
One of the issues I have found with Snagit is that I used to be able to capture a screen including a popup curing the CTRL/Alt/C. This seems to no longer to easily be avasilable possibly as a result of Windows 10 updates.
I then discovered that I might be able to do this with Windows 10 as I have installed the Creators Update. In this article it covers all the updates in the Creators Update. This article covers seven top features of the Creators Update and also how to access the update if you do not want to wait for a notification automatically advises you the update is available, as they did in my case. You will also get a prompt from Microsoft to review and update your privacy settings before the update is installed.
There is a new Screenshot Hotkey which means that whenyou press Windows+Shift+S you can capture a region of your screen and copy it to your clipboard. This feature was originally part of OneNote.
You can see how I could capture an image this way of one of my Facebook Pages.
The Snipping tool has been a part of Windows for long time and was first included in Windows Vista and can take screenshots of an open window, rectangular area, a free-form area, or the entire screen. You can annotate your snips with different colored pens or a highlighter and save it as an image.
In Windows 10, the Snipping Tool has a “Delay” option. Open the Snipping Tool app and click Delay. From the drop-down list, click on the number of seconds you’d like to wait until your screenshot is taken. This is another way to help you tqake screen captures of popup Windows.
What I did to add annotations to the screen capture was to import the image into my Snagit Editor (I am using version 12.4.1 of Snagit). I noticed on the left panel you can import an image from your clipboard and then continue to edit it.
Notes About Troubleshooting Windows 10 And Snagit Issues
One thing to note about the Windows 10 Creators Update is that firstly it will take a long time to update – I switched off the PC and enabled it to update at that time. When I returned to the PC the following day it then took over 90 minutes to complete the install.
Then I wanted to check my mic and camera settings before my next live video show. To my dismay, while the camera was OK the settings in terms of audio were not correct. It appeared from a Google search that I am not alone with this issue. This article takes you through how to fix the error about sound not working when you have upgraded to the Creators Update..
I discovered though that it may be a very simple action to correct the issue of no sound, the solution might be very simple. When I checked the sound options in my task bar on the computer, I could see that the output was incorrect. Correcting that seems to have solved the issue for me.
Snagit 12 for Windows – Audio Not Working on Windows 10
Another issue I found as a result of the update to the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is that Snagit audio and video did not play when recorded.
To fix theses issues, you can follow these steps from Snagit – note this is not an issue on Snagit 13.
